emergent
Emergent: I spread color directly from the tube, often several at once, with a pallet knife, structure emerging as the knife moves across the canvas, naturally, through the spreading process, color mixing cross multiple scales. In most, I constrain the movement of the knife to be in only one direction, left to right, yielding a sense of layering, stratification, with occasional crosscutting chatter as the knife leaves and is brought back to the canvas. The sequence, depth and length of layers is not predetermined, it emerges through immersion in the application process. Colors used in a work are constrained at the start but order is chosen as the work evolves; application of new color on fresh canvas or over previously painted regions, or the smearing of the canvas with the knife, arises naturally, without predetermination, no paint is removed from the work once applied. A work is completed before paint begins to cure, certainly within 24 hours, when it feels complete.
