This painting is one from a series where I apply paint in layers while it is still wet and then remove paint with a variety of knives to “sculpt” the painting, color emerging from below. Here I have applied oil paint in layers composed of yellows, reds and light blue, with a final outer deep dark blue. Cuts from into the wet paint and removal form a series of edges or doors into multiple universes of color and texture. The curing process, requiring many months, imparts complex surface structure that reflects light in mesmerizing patterns across the field imparting infinite variability to the observer.
